Raised in Westport on California’s Mendocino Coast, Galen Oakes picked up a camera at 16. His practice spans artist portraiture, editorial covers, documentary work and commercial creative direction.
From 2009 through 2019, he photographed every annual gathering in Black Rock City—eleven consecutive Burns, without a skipped year. Decade in the Dust is his long-form record of the monumental and the intimate inside a city built to disappear.
